Venice Cruise Port: Is Your Ship Really in Venice?

Which Port Your Venice Cruise Really Leaves From

A cruise sold as leaving from Venice can board inside the lagoon - at the Marittima, Porto Marghera, Fusina or Chioggia - or at another port entirely, Ravenna's Porto Corsini or Trieste, so the port name on your booking decides the day.

  • Marghera: check in at the Marittima, not at Marghera; for MSC that is its Venice Cruise Terminal, and MSC transfers you to the ship.
  • Fusina or Chioggia: ask the line for its transfer; line 16's pier is not the cruise terminal, and line 11 is a boat-and-bus trip.
  • Ravenna: about 150 km from Marco Polo airport on the terminal's own list, with sailings at 17:00 in 2026 (16:00 on three Norwegian Gem dates); go by the line's shuttle bus, train or car.
  • Trieste: about 2 hours from Venezia Santa Lucia on the faster direct regional trains.
  • The trap: planning around the word Venice. Marghera passengers check in at the Marittima, never heading to Marghera on their own. After a Ravenna cruise, never book a tight connection to a flight home from Venice: ships are in at 06:00, the road to Venice can take up to three hours, then come check-in and security.

The word misleads because Venice's big-ship rules changed in 2021, the berths moved, and some lines kept the city's name on the ticket anyway.

The Marittima cruise terminal in Venice seen from the water, a low dark-glass building under white umbrella-shaped canopies, with two white boarding bridges on an empty quay and no ship alongside

Since August 1, 2021, no ship over 25,000 gross tonnage (GT), longer than 180 m at the waterline or with an air draft over 35 m (sail-motor ships excepted) may transit the San Marco Basin, the San Marco Canal or the Giudecca Canal, waterways the decree setting these limits also declared a national monument.

The terminal operator, VTP, lists these 2026 berths: the Marittima and San Basilio for ships up to 25,000 GT, Porto Marghera's Liguria and Lombardia docks, Fusina (its terminal fully operational since August 2024) and Chioggia. Your booking names yours, and lines switch ports between seasons. Ravenna's Porto Corsini is the 2026 homeport for NCL, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships. Celebrity sells it as "Ravenna (Venice)", Holland America sells Trieste as "Trieste, (Venice)", and those parentheses are doing a lot of work.

Map of the Venetian Lagoon showing where Venice cruises berth: red dots mark Fusina on the mainland shore and Chioggia at the lagoon's southern end, and the Porto Marghera port district is labeled on the mainland west of Venice. A city inset shows the Marittima and San Basilio berths on Venice's western edge, near Venezia Santa Lucia station and the Piazzale Roma bus station, with Marco Polo airport on the northern shore

So find your port name and skip to it: Marittima and Marghera ships both check in at the Marittima, Fusina and Chioggia share a problem, and Ravenna and Trieste are trips of their own.

Marghera and the Marittima: Check In at the Marittima, Not at Marghera

If your ship is at Porto Marghera, embarkation and disembarkation for both Marghera docks still run through the Marittima in the historic center. The Marittima is the port of Venice cruise terminal area, and you check in at the terminal assigned to your ship. MSC runs its entire embarkation, from bag drop to the health and safety checks, at its Venice Cruise Terminal there, then transfers guests to the ship. If your ship berths at the Marittima itself, you check in and board right there, at your ship's own terminal.

⚠️ Warning

Don't head to Marghera on your own to board. MSC says guests who turn up there will be asked to go to the Marittima for check-in and might risk being late for embarkation, and taxis do not pick up there.

Venezia Santa Lucia station is about a kilometer from the cruise port. Turn right out of the station, cross the Ponte della Costituzione to Piazzale Roma and take the People Mover one stop toward Tronchetto, getting off at Marittima. Or walk the whole way: about 20 minutes by MSC's count, which assumes you pack lighter than most people heading off for a week at sea. MSC's check-in address is Marittima Fabbricato 248.

Map from Venezia Santa Lucia station to the Marittima cruise port: a dashed walking route crosses the Ponte della Costituzione and follows the road northwest to the Marittima People Mover stop, the green People Mover line links Piazzale Roma, Marittima and Tronchetto, and a red outline marks the Marittima cruise terminal area around both arms of the Marittima Basin, with VTP parking inside it

A one-way People Mover ride costs €1.50 from the machines in its stations, and ACTV's 75- and 100-minute rete unica network tickets cover it too. It starts at 07:00 on weekdays, later on holidays.

The Ponte della Costituzione, a shallow red steel and glass arch footbridge, spanning the Grand Canal with people crossing, a cargo boat stacked with boxes in the foreground and vaporetto stops along the left bank

Coming by train, buy the ticket to Venezia Santa Lucia, not Venezia Mestre on the mainland, unless you take MSC's own alternative and ride a taxi from Mestre to the cruise port. From Milan, take one of the trains that reach the island.

From Marco Polo airport, 12 km from the city, an ACTV bus runs to Piazzale Roma. A one-way ticket to or from the airport is €10, valid 75 minutes, and from Piazzale Roma it's the People Mover again.

Driving in, follow the signs for Venice and, at the end of the road bridge into the city, take the first right toward the port area. MSC's passenger parking is VTP's lot directly in front of the Stazione Marittima.

The People Mover doesn't take you to the door. From its Marittima stop to the farther check-in halls I still had 500 to 700 meters to drag the suitcases, on open asphalt with no cover from sun or rain. And I won't arrive at the very start of check-in again: that's when hundreds of people hit the People Mover turnstiles at once, then stand in a stuffy hall waiting for the transfer. A couple of hours later in the window, bag drop is calm and there are free seats on the shuttle to the ship.

Fusina and Chioggia: Ask the Line for Its Transfer First

For a ship at Fusina or Chioggia, ask your cruise line what transfer it runs from Venice before you plan anything else. The public boats exist, but line 16's Fusina stop is not the cruise terminal, and line 11 out of Chioggia is a boat-and-bus trip that eats into your time ashore.

At Fusina the boat is real. The last stretch is the trouble. Line 16 uses the parking terminal's pier, and getting from there to the cruise terminal with your bags, on roads without sidewalks, is not a workable plan. On a timetable it looks like the obvious connection, which is precisely how it catches people.

Line 16 is run by Terminal Fusina, not ACTV, and links Fusina with the Zattere waterfront in Venice in 25 to 30 minutes. Boats leave Fusina hourly from 08:00 to 18:00, with later ones in season, and times can change for events, holidays or weather. It takes its own ticket, €10 one way, and ACTV's 75-minute ticket and its passes are not valid on it.

So the line's transfer is the plan for you and your bags, and line 16 is the boat into the city once you are already standing at its pier.

Chioggia swaps the Fusina problem for a slower one: whatever the trip to Venice costs comes straight out of your hours there.

A canal in Chioggia at dusk lined with small moored motorboats, a yellow arcaded building on the left and restaurant tables under red awnings on the right, with a stone footbridge and a brick bell tower at the far end reflected in the still water

On your own, ACTV's line 11 runs from Chioggia to the Lido as a boat, a bus, a car ferry and a bus, about 70 minutes in all, and the waterbuses for Venice leave from the Lido end. That is four legs before you are even on the boat to Venice, a lot of commuting for a day meant for the city.

Venice to Ravenna Cruise Port: Shuttle, Train or Car

Getting from Venice to the Ravenna cruise port is a real trip: Venice's Marco Polo airport is about 150 km (about 93 miles) from Ravenna on the cruise terminal's airport list, the terminal at Porto Corsini is 13 km from Ravenna station, and in 2026 the homeport ships sail at 17:00, or 16:00 on three Norwegian Gem dates.

Route map from Marco Polo airport to the Ravenna cruise terminal at Porto Corsini: the driving route passes Mestre and Padua, runs south via Rovigo to Ferrara, then heads east to the coast near Comacchio and south to Porto Corsini. Ferrara is marked as the usual train change, Ravenna station sits inland south of Porto Corsini, and Bologna airport lies far to the west

The 2026 homeport sailings end on November 1; for a 2027 cruise, go by the sailing time on your booking. Three ways to the ship:

WayWhat it takesWatch for
The line's shuttle busBooked with your cruise line, from Venice or the airportLeaves on its schedule, not yours
Train + busRegional trains to Ravenna, one change (usually Ferrara), typically 2¾ - 3¼ hours, from about €17; then line 90, about 30 minutesNo line 90 on Sundays or holidays until April 25
Booked transfer carDoor to door, priced per carPick a class with room for your bags

The line's shuttle is the honest default: nothing to navigate, nothing to time against a sailing. On a busy turnaround morning you may wait at the airport for your turn, and the port road can get congested on ship days.

Ravenna's Piazza del Popolo at night after rain, wet paving reflecting the streetlights, with the crenellated Palazzo Comunale and its two stone columns at the far end and cafe umbrellas and parked bicycles along the sides

There is no direct train from Santa Lucia. A Frecciarossa leg cuts it to about 2 hours 20 minutes at a higher, changing fare, and some runs take longer, so check the day's timetable. Ravenna station is in the historic center, with a taxi stand and luggage storage in its square.

Line 90 runs from the Ravenna FS-v. Maroncelli stop to Porto Corsini Traghetto, opposite the terminal entrance. RadioTaxi Ravenna, the city's only taxi operator, works around the clock: +39 0544 33888.

A booked transfer suits a group sharing one car (the price is per car, within the class's capacity), a flight the line's shuttle doesn't fit, or a door-to-door run from a Venice hotel. A couple should price it against the shuttle first; private transfers on this route are not cheap. Book a pickup with real slack before your sailing time, and don't squeeze four people with big suitcases into the smallest class.

Landing day: no tight connection to a flight from Venice

⚠️ Warning

Don't book a tight connection home from Venice on the day your ship lands in Ravenna. The ship is in at 06:00, the drive to Venice can take up to three hours, and the airport's check-in and security still come after that. A flight at 12:45 is already too tight.

Taxis are no sure thing that morning either. The terminal says they generally wait inside the terminal area on ship days, but NCL warned in August 2026 that guests on previous visits had waited up to two hours. The road can bring fog, traffic and accidents too. So take a later flight with no tight connection, on your line's airport transfer where it sells one or in a car timed to it; fly from Bologna, about 100 km from Ravenna on the terminal's list; or fly the next day.

A night on either side takes the pressure off both days. Arrive in Ravenna the day before and the sailing time stops being a deadline, and the town repays it with good food and art enough for two days. Pick a room an easy walk from the station: the taxi stand and the line 90 stop for the terminal are both there, and a room across town means hauling your bags to them on sailing day.

Trieste: About Two Hours on the Faster Direct Regional Trains

Trieste's cruise terminal, the Stazione Marittima on Molo dei Bersaglieri, sits on the waterfront a few steps from Piazza Unità d'Italia, about a kilometer along the water from Trieste Centrale station. Check with your cruise line that your ship docks there.

Direct regional trains run from Venezia Santa Lucia to Trieste Centrale through the day, at two speeds. The faster ones take about 2 hours, run roughly hourly and cost from about €16.50; some direct trains take about 3 hours and charge more for the privilege, and the journey search shows which is which. Those timings are for the trip out; for the way back, look up your own date.

Trenitalia's journey planner, to search Venezia Santa Lucia to Trieste Centrale for your date (trenitalia.com)

By Holland America's own figures, the terminal is about 150 km from Marco Polo airport by road, 2 hours depending on traffic. There is no luggage storage at the pier, so with a late flight home, settle where your bags spend the day before you walk off the ship.

Of the two far ports, Trieste is the easy one by train: a direct regional, no change to miss, and, if your ship is at the Stazione Marittima, a terminal in the city itself rather than a bus ride out of it.

Disembarkation Day: Bags, a Few Hours in Venice, the Airport

If you come off a ship through the Marittima with an evening flight home, the order is the People Mover to Piazzale Roma, then bags, then the city, then the airport bus from Piazzale Roma: the trip in from the airport, run in reverse.

Santa Lucia station has its own answer: the Kipoint desk along platform 1, which takes bags from €6, opens at 07:00 and includes use of the station's restrooms, a perk that grows on you by mid-afternoon. Hand the suitcase over and it stops being the main character of your day.

Closer to the buses, bookable drop points sit around the Piazzale Roma bus terminal, in shops, a café and a restaurant, each on its own hours; one point even closes for two hours in the afternoon. Before you book, check its hours against your flight, and skip any point that shuts before you are back.

No access fee has been in force since July 27, 2026, and any fee for the years after 2026 is the City of Venice's decision, so check the official page for your date.

The City of Venice's access-fee portal, to check the fee for your date (cda.ve.it)

A few hours buy one corner of the city, not a tour of it, so choose the corner before you leave the ship. What to book at San Marco, and how many nights the city deserves if you add some, are in my Venice planning guide, booking order included.

My corner for those hours is Dorsoduro, on the same side of the Grand Canal as Piazzale Roma, so no waterbus stands between you and your bags. Walk from Piazzale Roma to Campo Santa Margherita, a wide, lived-in square with good coffee and few tour groups, then on to the Zattere, the sunny waterfront along the Giudecca Canal, where the tables sit right by the water. For lunch, stand at the counter of Cantine del Vino già Schiavi (closed Sundays), across the canal from the San Trovaso gondola yard, with cicchetti, Venice's bar snacks, and a glass of prosecco. Then loop back through the quiet lanes past the Frari church, and the bags are a walk away whatever the waterbuses are doing.

For getting around, a 75-minute waterbus ticket costs €9.50; bought on board, it's card only, no cash. Otherwise you walk, which in Venice is less the backup plan than the main line.

If the flight is tomorrow, or your ship sails tomorrow, stay the night: it turns a race against the clock into an actual visit, and the same guide covers where to sleep.

Flying out the same evening, give the airport ride more slack than feels necessary: an hour bored at the gate is cheap, a missed flight is not.

Venice Cruise Port: Common Questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Venice now?
Inside the lagoon, at the Marittima and San Basilio (ships up to 25,000 GT), Porto Marghera, Fusina and Chioggia. Some "Venice" cruises leave from Ravenna or Trieste.
Can a cruise ship still sail past St. Mark's Square?
Not a big one. Since August 1, 2021, a ship over 25,000 GT, over 180 m long at the waterline or with an air draft over 35 m (sail-motor ships excepted) may not transit the San Marco Basin and Canal or the Giudecca Canal.
Can I go straight to Marghera to board?
No. For a Marghera ship you check in at the Marittima, at your ship's assigned terminal. MSC says guests who turn up at Marghera on their own will be asked to go to the Marittima and might risk being late, and taxis do not pick up there.
How do I get from Venice to the Ravenna cruise port?
The cruise line's shuttle bus; the train, usually changing at Ferrara, then line 90 or a taxi; or a private car. Arrive well before your sailing time: the 2026 homeport ships leave at 17:00, or 16:00 on three Norwegian Gem dates.
Can I fly home the day my ship arrives in Ravenna?
Not on a tight connection from Venice. The ship is in at 06:00, the road to Venice can take up to three hours, taxis can mean a wait, and check-in and security still follow; a flight at 12:45 is already too tight. Take a later flight on your line's airport transfer where it sells one or in a car timed to it, fly from Bologna, or fly the next day.

Check the port name before you reserve anything else: on a cruise ticket, Venice is a direction, not an address.
