Venice

Venice sits in a lagoon off Italy's northeast coast, a city of canals and footbridges where boats do the work that cars do everywhere else. Most trains from the rest of Italy run right to Santa Lucia station on the Grand Canal, and from there you walk or take the waterbus. I'd give it at least one night: the early morning, before the day-trippers arrive, is when the city belongs to itself.
