Campania
Campania is the region around Naples in Italy's south, a bay ringed by volcanic ground with Vesuvius rising over it. The eruption of AD 79 buried Pompeii and Herculaneum and preserved them almost street by street. South of the city the Sorrento peninsula runs out toward Capri, and its far side drops into the Amalfi Coast, towns stacked up the cliffs above the sea. I like a day here that starts with an espresso in Naples and ends with a view across the bay.
