Train or ferry from La Spezia to the Cinque Terre?

• Take the train. It's 8 minutes from La Spezia Centrale to Riomaggiore and about 25 to Monterosso, roughly three trains an hour in season, from around 05:00 until after 23:00.
• The ferry is an outing. It calls at Portovenere first, so Riomaggiore is 80 minutes away. It skips Corniglia, its last boat back leaves in the late afternoon, and rough seas cancel it. Boat out, train back.
• The trap: the fare depends on the date. A ride costs €5, €8 or €10, and the one-day Cinque Terre Card pays off only from the fourth or fifth ride.

The train from La Spezia Centrale reaches all five Cinque Terre villages in 8 to 25 minutes, and on most days it's the only transport you'll need.

The line is mostly tunnel. It surfaces at each village long enough to open the doors, then dives back into the cliff, so the views start once you step off. The boat is the reverse deal: it buys you the arrival from the sea and costs you the morning. In the time the boat needs for the first village, the train could get you to Monterosso three times over.

So the train is how you get there and how you get home. My rule for the boat: take it once, out in the morning, and let the train bring you back. A return by boat leans on the two things the ferry does worst: evenings, when it has already stopped, and a swell, when it doesn't sail at all. The train keeps going until nearly midnight and has no opinion about the sea.

Coming from Milan, you may not need La Spezia at all. The direct Intercity stops at Monterosso before it reaches La Spezia, so for Monterosso or Vernazza, stepping off the Milan train one stop early saves you the ride down and back.

Train tickets from La Spezia: single ride or Card, and why the date matters

A single-ride train ticket from La Spezia to any Cinque Terre village costs €5, €8 or €10 in the 2026 season, depending on the date, and it's valid for one trip within 75 minutes. The one-day Cinque Terre Treno MS Card, the national park's train pass, costs €22, €29.50 or €35 on the same dates.

The 2026 tariff, Mar 14 - Nov 1, by band:

Out to a village, two hops along the line, and back is four rides: the Card wins in bands B and C, single rides win in A. Add a third hop and it's five, and the Card wins in every band. After 19:30, every regional train between Levanto and La Spezia is priced as band A, so the late ride home is the cheap one. The bands don't follow a simple weekday/weekend split, which is how a Friday manages to land in all three, so check your date on the park's 2026 calendar, where the cell color is the band: green A, yellow B, red C. Buying on your phone? "GG" in a card's name means days (giorni).

Besides unlimited second-class regional trains between La Spezia and Levanto, the La Spezia legs included, the Card covers the village minibuses, Corniglia's station shuttle among them, and the village station toilets (€1 otherwise). Since March 14, 2026, it also includes Via dell'Amore, where booking is compulsory. If the day includes a walk, check which trails are open before you count on one. It doesn't cover the boat.

A paper single-ride ticket needs a stamp in the station validator before you board; a digital ticket in the app doesn't. Forgot? Tell the conductor as you get on, and it costs a €5 penalty instead of a fine. The Card carries your name, and inspectors check it against your ID.

Catching the train at La Spezia Centrale

Every Cinque Terre train from La Spezia leaves from La Spezia Centrale, heading toward Levanto or Sestri Levante. If you came in on the train from Florence or Pisa, you don't even leave the station.

The trains that call at all five villages are the 5 Terre Express, running Mar 14 - Nov 1, and the hourly regionals to Sestri Levante, running all year.

Buy before you head to the platform: the park's Welcome Center inside the station, the ticket office, the machines and the Trenitalia app all sell the Card, or get it ahead in the park's online shop. At the village stations, a line often forms when a busy train pulls in. Some morning trains leave in pairs, like 11:12 and 11:20, and everyone fights for the first; if it's full to the doors, the second is eight minutes behind. Before about 09:00 the trains are the calm ones, as a rule of thumb; later, even standing room can run out.

Centrale has no luggage storage, and a crowded village train is a miserable place to wrestle a big suitcase. If you arrive before check-in or leave after checkout, book a storage point near the station, and check its closing time against your train back before you pay.

Before you go:

• Strikes. A rail strike stops the trains between the villages too, and the ferry, the only fallback, gets mobbed. Check the ministry's strike calendar, where rail strikes are listed as Ferroviario.
• Step-free access. Centrale has elevators to platforms 1 to 7 from 06:00 to midnight, plus assistance for travelers with reduced mobility. In the villages, Monterosso's station has assistance; Riomaggiore's and Vernazza's don't.

Sleeping in La Spezia buys cheaper rooms and more restaurants, and the late last train makes it work. What it costs is the village evening, the hours after the day-trippers have gone home.

The ferry from La Spezia: the pier, the ticket, the sea

The ferry from La Spezia to the Cinque Terre leaves from the pier on Passeggiata Morin, near the Thaon di Revel bridge, about a 20-minute walk from Centrale. The first boat is at 09:15.

Then come the 10:15 and 11:15. Until September 27 there are also boats at 12:15, 14:05 and 15:20, the 12:15 and 15:20 from May 18; from September 28, the only afternoon boat is the 13:30. The operator, Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti, lists every Line 02 timetable by date on its schedule page. The day ticket (€42) is a round trip, and an afternoon ticket (€28) goes on sale at the pier from 14:00. Day tickets sell online up to eight hours before service starts; the rest only at the pier, on the day. Bring cash: the ticket office's card reader has been known to go down.

On busy days, be at the pier at least half an hour early. The lines are a guessing game, and the boat takes a hundred-plus people. You board and land over a gangplank, which matters if steps and balance are hard for you.

The 80 minutes are the price, and the approach to a village from the water is what you pay it for. Whether that's a fair trade is the one question on this pier no timetable answers.

I made this crossing myself, one way, on a late-May morning this year: out by boat, back by train. The tunnel would have given me a few seconds of blue between mountains; the boat gave me the whole approach, bare cliffs breaking slowly into a knot of pastel houses. Vernazza won it for me: the boat rounds a dark headland and the harbor opens all at once, Doria castle's tower on the rock and the yellow bell tower of Santa Margherita right at the waterline, morning light hitting both straight on. None of it was calm - once we cleared the shelter of Portovenere's gulf into open water, the swell had people gripping the rail, spray hitting camera lenses, diesel exhaust drifting up from belowdecks. A working crossing, not a postcard, and it made the first step onto Vernazza's stones better for it.

If the boat is the whole point, a small-boat tour skips the big ferry and the wait at the pier. Check three things in the listing: the group size, where it leaves from (La Spezia or Portovenere), and whether a rough sea gets you a refund or a new date.

From the La Spezia cruise port on your own, and back before all-aboard

From the La Spezia cruise terminal at Largo Fiorillo, the Cinque Terre trains at Centrale are about 25 - 30 minutes away on foot, and the ferry pier is under ten minutes.

Don't plan on a taxi. On big-ship days the port's cabs go fast, and the stand at Centrale is often empty, which matters more on the way back than on the way out. Walking is the one move that never sells out.

I'd pick one or two villages, not four. Cruise days fill them, and the trains back to La Spezia run packed. Out, one hop, and back is three rides, and single tickets beat the Card in every band; for a longer day, run the break-even above. Either way, the train is your ride back to the ship.

On your own is cheaper and runs on your clock. A shore excursion costs more and buys the one thing no train can: a written promise to get you back to the ship, and a day spent looking at the villages instead of your watch. Before you book, check the listing: the return-to-ship guarantee and what it covers, a meeting point at the terminal, how many villages it visits, and whether a boat leg is included and what replaces it in rough seas.

Driving: where to park in La Spezia for the Cinque Terre

Riomaggiore and Manarola are closed to cars without a permit. For the other three villages, parking is hard enough that the national park itself advises against driving, so leave the car in La Spezia and take the train in. Both options below are on the town map above.

• Park & Ride at Piazza d'Armi or Piazzale Pozzoli. Free for the first 12 hours, then €2 an hour. A free shuttle runs into the center Monday to Saturday, 07:00 - 20:00, every 15 minutes until 08:30 and every 30 after that. From Piazza d'Armi, Centrale is about 15 minutes on foot.
• The garage under the station, Park Centro Stazione. Open 24 hours, the closest parking to the trains, and it fills early. A full garage sends you back out into the traffic to find the Park & Ride.

The 12 hours are why I'd pick the Park & Ride. Park at 08:00 and you pay nothing until 20:00; stay for dinner in a village, be back at the car by 22:00, and the overtime is about €4. That's a small price for skipping the garage lottery. Central La Spezia traffic is an ordeal either way, the kind that makes the villages' car bans look like a kindness.
